Event happened – and I am pretty happy about it! With my event being in the wilderness and the weather being less-than-perfect, we had very few attendees.  There were also three other event options in the metro areas and indoor.    However, one cool thing about having an event in the middle of nowhere is the interesting people that show up!  We were waiting to hit that magical time of 4:29PM when we saw someone coming down the little 4X4 trail on horseback.  We figured we’d wait for them since they may be a cacher.  Turns out, he was an honest to goodness cowboy!  He was going through the area trying to locate some straggling cattle from the day before.  He was curious as to what we were doin’, and after explaining it to him and answering the ‘usual’ questions (i.e. How many of these geocache things are there, what do you find in them, etc.), he was kind enough to sign our logbook.  He even shared some root beer hard candies with the group!

Before we knew it, it was already 5:00!  Probably my smallest turnout (6 attendees) but definitely one of the most memorable events, for sure!

Today is the day!  I have loaded up the truck with a unique logbook, some giveaway prizes, and snow gear.  After a week of unseasonably warm weather, today is the first snow at my event location (Tarryall, Colorado).  I made an announcement this morning letting folks know what kind of weather to prepare for, and ensuring that the event will in fact still happen.

Now my will attends got cut significantly by easy-to-access events popping up in the major cities, however I LOVE the idea of hosting a ‘Back to the Future’ event at the state’s original geocache!

Ill let you know how many folks braved the weather and showed up to the Back to the Cache Meet and Greet!

    Our last few trips included:

    A) downloading an offline list (or more than one) to the iPhone.

    B) Shortly before the trip, host a ‘going away to ______ meet and greet/trackable roundup’ event.  It’s an easy way to get a pile of those bugs and tags that have a mission to travel without the disappointment of going to countless caches that are devoid of listed trackables.

    C) keep an eye out for events!  It’s a ton of fun to meet cachers from a different locale than your core group.  You’ll make friends at great distances, and it’s a good way to get tips on ‘can’t miss’ caches!  Some places will also have geocoin a specific to their location that you’ll only find for purchase at their events!

C.1) no events in the area you are visiting while you’re there?  Host one!  We have yet to do this, but I hear it is a fantastic way to meet folks and get tips for the area.

    D) Check for different hazards.  If you are traveling a good distance from home, chances are that there will be a different type of hiking/caching hazard in that location.  Prime example: on our trips to Galveston, TX, ticks were a much bigger problem than we have ever seen back home in Colorado!  There were also reports of jellyfish washed up on shore near some of the caches – wouldn’t have thought to check if I didn’t do my research!

these are just a few of my common preparations for a geocaching road trip.  We will be taking one of those next month – staying in San Diego for almost a week, among a few other spots along the way.  We are definitely trying to get prepared for that!

This is 1/4 of the caching group HandyHomtead1120 at a geocache event yesterday!  Dressed up for the theme ‘Storm The Castle’ as the event was at the top of Castle Rock just south of Denver, CO.

We tried to make it work, but with our schedules, August was just not a good time to plan a trip.

Good news is that September is free, and we will be taking a trip to a sunny location 😉

We decided to host our first ‘multi-event’.  Apparently these events celebrate a special moment in time, and are held all over the world.

We decided to host our own version of the ‘Back To The Cache” multi event!  In Back to the Future II, Marty goes to October 21st, 2015 – and that is when the event will take place.  We are taking it up a notch and hosting the event at 4:29 PM!

We chose an open area near Colorado’s First cache (GC18) – calling the event an opportunity to go back in caching history by visiting the very first cache in our state!

Theme, Location, and date set!  Now to finish a cache page write up!

This is where I’m at on my latest ‘Back To The Cache’ event.  Just need to take the time to make the event page POP!  I’m really excited, because I was planning on hitting the area in hosting the event this year!

I know it’s part of the ‘work in progress’ and y’all are probably already working on it; but I am unable to access the actual DOJO section, nor can I get to the ‘root’ folder of this posting.  I happened upon this post and a few others under ‘recent posts’

I’m such a sucker for this sort of thing.  Started writing my cache page, ordered 60 coins, and I’m actually considering wearing some McFly gear.  Lol!  We’ll keep you posted!

Personally, I own/love the Garmin Colorado 400T.  Comes with awesome topo maps, a sweet 3D view (which I don’t use very often), paperless caching, a wherigo player, and can be updated to do Chirp caches!  It is also very rugged, and the battery life is outstanding.  A huge step forward from the eTrex Legend that I started caching with!

With this in mind, I may be trying to form a ‘back to Colorado’s First Cache’ event at Tarryall (GC18) on that day.  Does that sound like a fun idea?

We just got back from a campout trip/event where we earned our ‘extreme’ souvenir.  It was a blast!  We actually got three 5 terrain caches, including a 5T event – and we sure paddled hard to get there!

So far we are all caught up with all 3 souvenirs.  I convinced some geocaching friends to host their first CITO (actually, their first event) at a trail we adopted just outside of town.  That’s coming up in a couple of weeks, so we will be excited to earn the 4th souvenir there!
