Our last few trips included:

A) downloading an offline list (or more than one) to the iPhone.

B) Shortly before the trip, host a ‘going away to ______ meet and greet/trackable roundup’ event.  It’s an easy way to get a pile of those bugs and tags that have a mission to travel without the disappointment of going to countless caches that are devoid of listed trackables.

C) keep an eye out for events!  It’s a ton of fun to meet cachers from a different locale than your core group.  You’ll make friends at great distances, and it’s a good way to get tips on ‘can’t miss’ caches!  Some places will also have geocoin a specific to their location that you’ll only find for purchase at their events!

C.1) no events in the area you are visiting while you’re there?  Host one!  We have yet to do this, but I hear it is a fantastic way to meet folks and get tips for the area.

D) Check for different hazards.  If you are traveling a good distance from home, chances are that there will be a different type of hiking/caching hazard in that location.  Prime example: on our trips to Galveston, TX, ticks were a much bigger problem than we have ever seen back home in Colorado!  There were also reports of jellyfish washed up on shore near some of the caches – wouldn’t have thought to check if I didn’t do my research!

these are just a few of my common preparations for a geocaching road trip.  We will be taking one of those next month – staying in San Diego for almost a week, among a few other spots along the way.  We are definitely trying to get prepared for that!
